Stekelenburg staying at Roma

Maarten Stekelenburg is unlikely to leave Roma during the current transfer window after failing to receive any serious offers to move elsewhere.

The 30-year-old has made just nine appearances this season and has been replaced as first choice goalkeeper by Mauro Goicoechea since Zdenek Zeman took charge of the club, prompting his agent to state last week that there was “a serious problem between him and the coach.”

He has been linked with a number of sides as the transfer window re-opened - including Arsenal and Fulham - while this week’s announcement that Victor Valdes is to leave Barcelona saw him join Liverpool’s Pepe Reina in being suggested as a possible target for the Catalan giants.

On Tuesday however his agent spoke once again and dismissed all those destinations as just talk, revealing no club had approached either the player or the Giallorossi with a serious offer.

“At the moment there are just rumours and journalistic speculation,” Rob Jansen said to Italian website We have yet to receive a concrete offer, so it is therefore probable that he will stay at Roma in January rather than leave.

“We know what is moving in the goalkeeping market this summer but nothing has been decided yet.”
