Leonardo Jardim: Monaco exit with 'heads held high' after semifinal defeat

Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim praised the efforts of his young side after they crashed out of the Champions League in the semifinals on Tuesday night.

The long road for Monaco began in July in the third qualifying round, and they had to overcome both Fenerbahce and Villarreal just to reach the group stage.

They beat Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund in the knockout stage, but Juventus proved to be too tall a task as the Italian giants advanced 4-1 on aggregate.

But Jardim said Monaco had nothing to be embarrassed about as he turned his focus to Ligue 1, where they enjoy a three-point lead with a game in hand.

"On the one hand there was a very experienced team and on the other there was a young side," Jardim said of Tuesday night's defeat.

"We are very happy with this semifinal and very proud of the players. The players gave everything and we could have drawn tonight.

"We exit the competition with our heads held high. Now we are going to focus on the league."

The Champions League proved to be a coming out party for young star Kylian Mbappe, who scored his sixth goal of the competition on Tuesday. And the 18-year-old said he was better for the experience against Europe's top clubs.

"We came with our weapons, we wanted to make it difficult, but we only managed that in fits and starts," Mbappe told L'Equipe. "That is not enough. We again leave with our heads high.

"My goal is useless, it's anecdotal. But there aren't many regrets from this European campaign. By playing against the best we learned, I learned, and we will try to come back next year even better prepared."
