Monaco waiting to see if Radamel Falcao is fit enough to face Man City

Monaco are sweating over the fitness of striker Radamel Falcao as they prepare to host Manchester City in Wednesday's Champions League round-of-16 second leg.

Monaco have a 5-3 deficit to make up from the first leg at the Etihad Stadium last month, and the absence of former Manchester United and Chelsea forward Falcao, who scored twice in the opening game, would be a real setback for the Ligue 1 side.

The Colombia international came off the bench during Monaco's 2-1 win over Bordeaux on Saturday after two weeks on the sidelines with muscle fatigue, only to receive a painful blow on his right hip in the closing minutes.

"It was a big knock, but I hope to be able to give everything and help the team," Falcao is quoted as saying by L'Equipe. "The most important thing is that all the players are available, in the same way as usual."

Should Falcao not make it, promising youngster Kylian Mbappe, who also found the net in the first leg and whose pace and directness posed City plenty of problems, will likely be employed through the centre of the Monaco attack.

For the moment, coach Leonardo Jardim admits his plans remain up in the air.

"I don't know, it's a violent blow on the right side [for Falcao]," Jardim told reporters after the weekend win that kept Monaco three points clear at the top of Ligue 1. "We're going to see what happens. I hope it's not serious, that it's only a knock, but I have to wait for the tests."

Monaco come into Wednesday's game having won all six of their previous two-legged ties against English opposition and having scored 84 goals in just 29 Ligue 1 matches this season, meaning Bernardo Silva and his teammates are optimistic ahead of the clash.

"We'll have to play an exceptional match. We know City are good at the moment, but with our fans, we can do it," Silva told Nice Matin. "We have that ambition, we'll see what happens. We know we mustn't concede a goal. But we know it's not easy against that team.

"We're going to try to be focussed and not make the same mistakes as in the first leg. We also know that we're capable of scoring. Monaco score a lot. It'll be difficult, but we're capable of doing it.

"We're going to do everything to go through. If we're good, we can go through. Also, we have Falcao, who's having a good spell right now. He scores and helps out defensively. We're happy to have him with us."
