Former France international Claude Makelele: I wasn't wanted at Monaco

Former France international Claude Makelele has said he left his role as Monaco's technical director because he did not feel wanted by the club's manager Leonardo Jardim.

Makelele, 43, was appointed to the position in January but Monaco announced on Monday that he had asked to step down.

Speaking to L'Equipe, the ex-Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder said he had left on good terms but that he had told Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev that he felt restricted in his job.

There was also a clear lack of understanding between Makelele and some of the club's Portuguese staff -- in particular Jardim.

"People spoke of a war but for me it wasn't one -- it was a culture shock," Makelele told L'Equipe. "We work differently. And the difference is such that it's difficult to collaborate.

"I worked at Real Madrid, at Chelsea, at PSG. I adapted everywhere. Here I never found cohesion."

Makelele took the job after being sacked as Bastia boss in November 2014 and he thinks that Jardim feared that he wanted to resume his coaching career in the principality.

"I left Jardim time to show him who I was," Makelele said. "We discovered each other on a human level I would say but I was never able to work with him.

"He had his way of working -- he never wanted to get out of it and we never worked together.

"Over time he should have realised that I wasn't a danger but he remained closed.

"I'm not annoyed with him. The conditions weren't there for me to be able to move forward."
