Arsenal wanted to beat Atletico Madrid for Arsene Wenger - Hector Bellerin

Hector Bellerin has said he was disappointed that Arsenal could not win the Europa League semifinal first leg against Atletico Madrid for departing manager Arsene Wenger.

Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw by an Atletico side who were down to 10 men early on when Sime Vrsaljko was sent off but equalised through Antoine Griezmann late on.

Wenger announced last week that he would step down as manager at the end of the season after a 21-year career in North London.

And Bellerin told Onda Cero radio: "It was an emotional game for us because it is Wenger's last game at home in European competition.

"We obviously wanted to win the game for him. It could not be, but we will fight until the end."

Arsenal had 76 percent of possession and eight shots but only had Alexandre Lacazette's 61st-minute header to show for it.

"It's frustrating," Bellerin said. "We had many chances in front of goal. We weren't as efficient as we should be at this stage of the competition.

"Atletico were able to play well after Vrsaljko's sending off. In fact, I think it benefited them.

"Wenger told us at half-time to continue to press them as we had done in the first half. He told us to play more on the flanks.

"But we knew that a team like Atletico, which knows how to suffer like no other, could score in the end and that was the case."

Bellerin felt Arsenal had been unfortunate to concede Griezmann's equaliser, which came when a long ball broke to the striker amid defensive uncertainty.

"The only way Atletico were going to score is the way they did, with a long ball," he said.

"In Griezmann's goal, there was a minor distraction from our central defenders, but then the ball rebounded off the keeper and Shkodran Mustafi slipped. A lot of coincidences together."

But he added: "Despite the result, it was a good game for us. Now we will go there, to the Wanda Metropolitano, with a positive frame of mind."

That outlook was echoed by midfielder Jack Wilshere, who told the club's official website he believed Arsenal would cause problems in the second leg.

"We're confident that we can go to Madrid and, with the chances we created tonight, we are definitely going to create some chances and hopefully we'll put them away," he said.

"We're going to have to take the positives from tonight as we created loads and loads of chances and they have a great goalkeeper, but at the same time we found ways through their defence and we have to keep doing that.

"Hopefully, a little bit of luck will be on our side on the night."
