Arsenal sign Mohamed Elneny to new long-term contract

Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny has signed a new long-term contract with the club.

Arsenal announced the deal Monday but did not give details on the length of the contract.

"We would like to congratulate Mo on his new contract and look forward to his continued contribution in the coming seasons," the club said in a statement.

The Egypt international joined the Gunners from Basel in January 2016 and has since made 65 appearances, including 25 this season.

With Francis Coquelin having left the club in January, Elneny is the closest thing to a pure holding midfielder in the Arsenal squad and he has also been used as a centre-back at times in a back-three formation.

His contract extension comes after Arsenal were open to selling him last summer, when a deal with Leicester reportedly fell through over personal terms.
