Santi Cazorla left out of Arsenal's Premier League squad

Arsenal have left Santi Cazorla out of their Premier League squad for the first half of the season as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury.

Cazorla, 32, has been out of action since last October, having picked up his injury during the 6-0 Champions League win over Ludogorets.

The Spain international was initially expected to return the following November but had to have ankle surgery that December in Sweden, before having a graft done earlier this year and then going under the knife again in February.

Cazorla, who has had eight operations on his ankle since sustaining the injury, said in May he hoped to return to action within five months.

However, he will have to wait longer than that to appear in the Premier League after Arsenal opted against naming him in their 25-man squad on Friday, which applies until the January transfer window opens.

Arsenal's Premier League squad: Chuba Akpom, Hector Bellerin, Petr Cech, Calum Chambers, Francis Coquelin, Mathieu Debuchy, Mohamed Elneny, Olivier Giroud, Rob Holding, Deyan Iliev, Sead Kolasinac, Laurent Koscielny, Alexandre Lacazette, Matt Macey, Per Mertesacker, Nacho Monreal, Shkodran Mustafi, David Ospina, Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey, Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott, Danny Welbeck, Jack Wilshere, Granit Xhaka.
