Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil looks 'like he is down a coal mine' - Neville

Gary Neville has hit out at Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil and said he "can't be watching him play football sometimes."

Germany international Ozil -- along with teammate Alexis Sanchez -- is out of contract next year, with manager Arsene Wenger having said talks about new deals are on hold until the summer.

But speaking on Sky Sports ahead of Arsenal's key home game against Manchester City on Sunday, Neville criticised the attitude of Ozil and said he felt the faith Wenger had shown in some players was "misplaced."

He said: "I don't like the Sanchez situation, but I think on the pitch I can live with it because it looks like he fights for every single thing in the world.

"With Mesut Ozil, I can't be watching him play football sometimes -- and that sounds disrespectful from someone who was a clobber as a football player.

"But when you watch [Lionel] Messi and [Cristiano] Ronaldo, who give their all in every single match, I won't sit here and accept that someone plays football looking like he's down a coal mine."

Neville said he wanted Wenger, whose contract expires in the summer, to remain at Arsenal and added: "His loyalty to some of his players is misplaced, it really is.

"They disappoint me, a few of them. They have a weak spine and the idea they are blaming the managerial situation, that they are melting on the pitch because of the negativity around the club, typifies them."

Last week, Wenger laughed off Sanchez's comments about wanting to play for a team with a "winning mentality," and said he thinks both he and Ozil want to stay at Arsenal.

Wenger benched Sanchez for the Premier League game at Liverpool after the player stormed out of a training session. But he said: "I think personally he's happy here."

Arsenal need a win on Sunday to make up ground on the top four, having dropped to sixth after an alarming slump that includes four losses in their last five Premier League matches.
