Granit Xhaka risking short Arsenal stay with red cards - Martin Keown

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has said Arsene Wenger must teach Granit Xhaka to tackle properly to avoid any more sendings-off in the future.

Xhaka earned his second red card of the season -- and ninth since 2014 -- in Sunday's 2-1 win over Burnley at the Emirates when he lunged in for a two-footed challenge on Steven Defour in the second half.

Wenger said on Thursday that the red card was "harsh" but also acknowledged that Xhaka "is not naturally a great tackler."

However, Wenger said the solution was for the Switzerland midfielder to stay on his feet in the future rather than working on improving his tackling technique.

But Keown was adamant that Wenger "is going to have to work with Granit Xhaka and teach him how to tackle."

"With both of his red cards for Arsenal this season, Xhaka cleaned out his opponent with no chance of winning the ball. The 24-year-old needs to eradicate that mentality from his game," Keown wrote in the Daily Mail.

"He must also practise one-v-one situations with players running at him in training so he can learn how to slow them down before tackling them. ... Xhaka cannot go on like this. He needs to get out of the habit of trying to win the ball straight away. If he keeps getting sent off then it will only shorten his stay at Arsenal."

Xhaka will miss Arsenal's next four games as this is his second suspension of the season, ruling him out of next weekend's crucial Premier League game at leaders Chelsea.

It also leaves Arsenal with Francis Coquelin and Aaron Ramsey as the only available central midfielders, with Santi Caorla injured and Mohamed Elneny away at the African Nations Cup.

Wenger defended Xhaka at his news conference on Thursday but said he will not find a special coach to teach the £30 million summer signing to tackle.

"I would rather encourage him not to tackle, to stay on his feet and that's the best way to deal with it," Wenger said. "Tackling is a technique that you learn at a young age. You can improve it but when you are face-to-face with somebody, it's better you stay up."

And Keown, who won three league titles under Wenger, was confident the Arsenal boss can sort out Xhaka's on-pitch behaviour.

"In Wenger, Xhaka has a very personable manager who will help him iron out this problem," he wrote. "Wenger will deal with the situation in a calm manner and Xhaka will be left in no doubt of his responsibilities.
