Alexis Sanchez should have seen red against Bournemouth - Keith Hackett

Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez should have been sent off for his challenge on Bournemouth midfielder Harry Arter on Sunday, former referees' chief Keith Hackett has said.

Hackett, writing in his Daily Telegraph column, said referee Mike Jones "got three of the four big decisions wrong" and that he can understand Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe's frustration after the match.

Sanchez -- who scored in the 12th and 91st minutes of the 3-1 win -- was booked in the 62nd minute for what Hackett called "a dangerous challenge."

He added: "They are exactly the sort of tackles that we do not want in the game and must be dealt with firmly. I am clear that it should have been a red card."

Hackett said, however, that he agreed with Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger that Bournemouth's penalty, awarded after Nacho Monreal was adjudged to have fouled Callum Wilson, was "soft" and also disputed Howe's suggestion that the visitors should have had a penalty for handball in the second half.

"I thought that Monreal tried to get his arms out of the way in the second half when Simon Francis drove the ball at him," he said. "He was retracting his arms at pace and, with the distance so limited, that was not a deliberate handball.

"I know there is an appeal whenever the ball hits an arm inside the penalty area but the law is very specific: it has to be deliberate and I think Mike was right on this."

Hackett argued Howe had reason to be aggrieved "over the grappling we saw in the penalty area," though, saying: "Shkodran Mustafi could also count himself very fortunate after grabbing Bournemouth centre-back Steve Cook off the ball.

"English football has been moving in the right direction on dealing with these sorts of infringement -- led by Mike Dean -- but he is not being supported by other referees taking a strict line."
