Arsene Wenger revels in Arsenal's 'statement victory' at Hull City

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said his side's 4-1 win at Hull City on Saturday was a "statement victory" after a slow start to the season.

The Gunners lost their opening game of the season 4-3 to Liverpool before drawing 0-0 at Leicester City, but they have since recorded consecutive wins over Watford, Southampton and Hull.

Speaking after the triumph at Hull, Wenger said: "This is a statement victory. We scored three at Watford, we scored four against Hull. We played 0-0 at Leicester, but we had two or three opportunities. Away from home we look more convincing at the moment than at home.

"I believe that, when we lost our first game, it was a mental shock for us and for our supporters. Straight away you have a little bit of scepticism and doubt, you know, in your head. So it was important for us to win the Southampton game and hopefully now we can have the same quality at home.

"Look, the positivity comes from us, from our attitude. We have to think that we get the supporters behind us, when our performances are convincing and not the other way around."

Meanwhile, former France international Christophe Dugarry has backed Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud, who has yet to start a Premier League game this season.

Dugarry told SFR Sport: "He's used to it, the boy. Ever since he arrived in Ligue 1, there have been questions raised about whether or not he deserves his place. He has a certain profile. Is that profile enough to win titles at the highest level? It's up to his coaches to decide.

"What I like about the boy is that he is brave. He rarely disappoints, whatever people might say. He's not a spectacular player, I can't say I enjoy myself watching him play.

"He's effective, he has barren streaks like every striker. And Wenger doesn't know what he wants either. Sometimes it's [Lucas] Perez, then [Alexis] Sanchez, then [Danny] Welbeck and [Theo] Walcott. Arsene is a bit lost, so it's no surprise his players are too."
