Petr Cech accepts Arsenal fans' disappointment after Liverpool defeat

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech has said he understands the supporters' frustration after the side suffered a 4-3 defeat to Liverpool on the opening weekend of the Premier League season.

Arsenal took the lead through Theo Walcott in Sunday's match at Emirates Stadium but found themselves 4-1 down in the second half and they were unable to salvage a point.

The result led to boos from sections of the crowd with manager Arsene Wenger, who has made one high-profile signing this summer in Granit Xhaka, coming in for scrutiny.

Cech said in the London Evening Standard: "As a player we understand the supporters came with the ambition to win the first game of the season.

"We played well for 60 minutes, but were not good enough for 30 minutes. You have 37 more games and you need to make sure that is the last defeat."

Cech was, however, impressed with the performances of centre-back pairing Calum Chambers, 21, and 20-year-old Rob Holding, who joined the Gunners from Bolton this summer.

The former Chelsea player added: "I think it was more down to us. The momentum changed because of the free kick [Coutinho's equaliser].

"Liverpool came out with more ambition and were very aggressive. We were punished by the Adam Lallana goal to go 2-1 down and once we fell behind we opened the game too quickly and allowed them three, four, five counter-attacks.

"They [Holding and Chambers] did really well. You cannot be happy because you should not concede four goals at home, but I thought it was a really good experience for them."
