Arsenal striker Takuma Asano targets World Cup success with Japan

Arsenal striker Takuma Asano has said he wants to be a key player for Japan in the 2022 World Cup.

Asano, who starred in January's AFC Under-23 Championship in Doha, said he believed Japan could reach the semifinals in 2022.

The former Sanfrecce Hiroshima player, part of the national squad at the Olympic Games in Rio this summer, told the Qatar Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy website: "Anything is possible if we put in our best effort each time we take the field, whether it be in the 2022 qualifiers or the main tournament.

"I will turn 28 in November 2022 and hopefully will be at the peak of my career."

Asano said he felt Japan had "a very good chance" to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia and added: "I need to grab the opportunity in the qualifiers to feature in my first-ever World Cup.

"My motivation comes from watching Keisuke Honda, Shinji Okazaki and Shinji Kagawa. These are great players and there is a strong feeling in me that I have to surpass the high standards they have set."

In June, Arsenal agreed a deal to sign Asano from Sanfrecce Hiroshima, with manager Arsene Wenger calling the 21-year-old a promising prospect for the future.

Asano is unlikely to play a major role at the Emirates next season, with Wenger saying he still needs time to develop.

"Takuma is a talented young striker and very much one for the future," the manager added.

"He has had an impressive start to his career in Japan and we look forward to him developing over the next couple of years."

The club did not disclose financial terms of the deal.
