Petr Cech: Arsene Wenger has right 'pedigree' for England job

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech says Arsene Wenger has the right "pedigree" to be England coach but has his doubts about whether the longtime Gunners boss is interested in international management.

The FA is reportedly interested in sounding out whether Wenger is interested in the position after his Arsenal contract expires next season, and the Frenchman has yet to rule out the possibility.

While Wenger himself has in the past said England should ideally be coached by an Englishman, Cech said the Frenchman definitely has the right experience for the job.

"Obviously that is a question for Mr Wenger, if he would like to take this [England] job, but he is someone who has been coaching in England for such a long time, he definitely has the pedigree and the quality," Cech told Sky Sports on Thursday.

"He knows the atmosphere, the mentality and knows the expectation and the love England has for football, so obviously this is to his big advantage.

"But I think he is enjoying his time at Arsenal being a club manager, having the day-to-day job and it would be more of a question for him."

Wenger took charge of preseason training in North London this week, although Cech is among the players who have yet to join up with the squad after playing at the European Championship.

Cech, who was Wenger's only signing last summer as he joined from Chelsea, saw Arsenal finish without a trophy in his first season at the club as they came second behind Premier League champions Leicester. But he's convinced the club will challenge for trophies in the upcoming campaign.

"We were disappointed because we thought we were good enough to challenge for the title and to be in the race until the last game," Cech said.

"But we finished second which was the best finish for Arsenal in a long time, so there were positives in our last campaign and we would like to carry that on, to improve for the next season because we finished empty-handed and this is not what we wanted.

"For the next season the aim is to add some silverware into the cabinet, but we expect a big challenge as well ... so many teams are buying players and improving, everybody wants to be in the top four, and will be challenging for the title."

One of those teams is Manchester United, who have hired Cech's former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho and made several major signings, including Zlatan Ibrahomivc and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. And Cech said it will be strange to face Mourinho in the Old Trafford dugout.

He added: "It will be a different experience, I have to say. Maybe not as much for me as for the Chelsea boys, you know they spent the last two years with him in their dugout. But I think United will definitely be ready to challenge, buying so many players and improving the squad.

"And now with a manager who is always hungry for success, we can obiously expect them to improve from next season. That's why we need to prepare well and be on top."
