Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger: Too late for me to take France job

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says it is too late for him to move into international management, potentially ruling out the possibility of coaching France one day.

Wenger, 66, will celebrate his 20th anniversary at Arsenal in October but only has one year left on his contract, and has said he will not decide on his future until next summer.

The Frenchman has often been linked with the France job, but told beIN Sports, in quotes reported by the Daily Mirror, that he doesn't envision ever taking up that role.

"I think this time has gone now," Wenger said. "I have been asked a few times to do it. I was always busy somewhere else."

He had stayed coy on the issue earlier this month, when he simply said he was "a bit old now to make long-term plans" and that "we shall see what happens" after next season.

Wenger came under increasing criticism as Arsenal's Premier League challenge faltered this spring and has acknowledged that next season's results will be crucial in deciding his future at the club.

Wenger is working as a television pundit during Euro 2016, where host nation France could face England in the quarterfinals if they both advance from the round of 16.

"I just want my country to do well and have a good tournament because at the moment this country is going through a very difficult time. We have been hit hard through terrorism, strikes and many other unrests," he said.

"The country is a bit flat mentally at the moment, and they need a bit of happiness. Hopefully this tournament can give it to the country."
