Mesut Ozil expecting 'stronger players' to join Arsenal this summer

Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil has told Sport360 he thinks the club will be adding "stronger players" in the summer transfer window.

Ozil finished the season one assist shy of the Premier League's record as his teammates struggled to score during the second half of the campaign.

Arsenal gradually fell out of the title race but still managed to pip Tottenham Hotspur to second place on the last day of the season -- albeit 10 points behind winners Leicester.

Ozil, who is in Dubai to visit Arsenal's football school there, said that the team must be more focused and make some reinforcements to prevent the same thing from happening again next year.

"It's a long season and a lot of things must go right in the season. One of the things is players getting injured, which is one factor definitely," Ozil said. "On the other hand we just have to focus more and with stronger players maybe coming in be competitive for next season and we will see where we end up at the end."

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has said he may add three players this summer, with a striker on top of the wish list after Danny Welbeck's long-term injury. Arsenal are also reportedly close to signing Switzerland midfielder Granit Xhaka.

Ozil reiterated his claim that Arsenal lost the title by not playing well enough against teams in the lower half of the table, and said they struggled for a period in February and March.

"Especially after the Barcelona game [in the Champions League] we lost some points. That was a time when we weren't good enough to just take points and go," Ozil said.

Ozil also refused to comment on the speculation about Wenger's future, as the Arsenal manager has said he will not decide whether to stay at the club until the end of next season.

"For me it's important as a player that I concentrate, play football and that I do my best for the team and myself. I'm not telling something about the future of a manager, it's not my work to tell this for the club, it's for the club to decide about. It's not for me to decide," Ozil said.

The midfielder is now turning his attention to the European Championship, where he'll be one of Germany's key players as they try to follow up their World Cup victory with another trophy.

And with Arsenal teammate Per Mertesacker and Philipp Lahm both retired from internationals, Ozil acknowledged that he'll have to provide more leadership in the national team as well.

"I think I've now been with my national team for a long time. I've got experience but we have a good team as a whole and we are operating very well," he said. "After the World Cup we lost some important players but we are still strong and have young players to compensate for that who can help us be successful in France."

And having played in Germany's 3-2 loss to England in a recent friendly, Ozil said Roy Hodgson's team is one to be reckoned with in France.

"Against England in Berlin we were 2-0 up and yet they came back to get a 3-2 victory and that shows they have character and how strong they are mentally. That's what I saw that night and that's what I can say about the English team," Ozil said. "I think they will be one of the favourites for Euro 2016 but besides England there are other teams like France, Italy and Spain who are always very strong."
