Arsenal's Petr Cech gives up on catching Leicester and Tottenham

Arsenal's veteran goalkeeper Petr Cech admitted that his team are unlikely to finish in the top two positions in the Premier League after their draw against Sunderland.

The Gunners were held to a goalless draw by Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, which was their third draw in four games.

That result put them 12 points behind league leaders Leicester City, while Tottenham are four points ahead. Manchester City occupy third place, level on 64 points with Arsenal but have a superior goal difference.

"You need to start winning games," Cech told the Standard. "We have three games to play and we need to get as many points as we can.

"I don't think it will be enough to finish in the top two now as the other teams have taken advantage of our two points dropped."

Despite dominating possession and having 14 shots on the count, Arsene Wenger's team simply could not find the breakthrough as with most of their matches in the last two weeks.

Cech, 33, knows that the team must stop their profligacy in front of goal for the remainder of the season if they are to pip City to third spot and an automatic Champions League berth.

"We don't seem to [be able to] kill the game off in the last two weeks and we dropped twice points and now the fight is to get the best position for the Champions League." Cech added.

"I thought that we should have scored in the first half. We had chances to get the lead but that doesn't make a difference when you don't score.

"They [Sunderland] are fighting for their lives and they obviously had that motivation and once they got into the game, it became a difficult day. They have done really well.

"I thought we kept the ball well and created enough chances with our possession but we waited too long for an opportunity.

"I think we need to find a way to put it into the back of the net and we didn't do so."

The Gunners have three games remaining -- Norwich City, Manchester City and Aston Villa -- where they need to grab maximum points if they are to avoid finishing fourth and go through the Champions League playoff next season.
