Arsenal's Mikel Arteta could join Pep Guardiola's staff at Man City - source

Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta could join Manchester City as part of Pep Guardiola's coaching staff, a source close to the player has told ESPN FC.

Arteta, 34, is out of contract at the end of the season and is considering retiring and moving into coaching this summer due to his recent injury problems.

Despite being club captain, the Spanish midfielder has seen his involvement in Arsene Wenger's side restricted over the last two seasons due to a number of injuries and he has made just eight Premier League appearances this term because of a persistent calf problem.

Arteta is already pursuing a move into coaching and has completed some of his coaching badges while working at Arsenal's academy.

Guardiola is set to bring in his own backroom team to the Etihad Stadium this summer when he replaces Manuel Pellegrini and a source has told ESPN FC that he is ready to offer Arteta in his first-team coaching staff.

The pair, who both came through Barcelona's famed La Masia academy as young players, are close friends.

Arteta, who is keeping his options open, could also be offered a coaching role at Arsenal with Arsene Wenger a big admirer of the Spaniard, but any role is unlikely to be with the first-team.
