Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger not ready for new contract talks

LONDON -- Arsene Wenger has not yet started thinking about whether to extend his contract as Arsenal manager, but pledged to continue working for the club even after he is no longer in charge.

Wenger is in his 20th season with the North London side, making him the Premier League's longest-serving manager by some way -- behind him is Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe, in his fourth season following his return to the club in 2012.

Wenger has 18 months left of his current Arsenal contract, and said it is too early to start talks about extending it.

"You know that 18 months today for a manager is an eternity," Wenger said on Friday at his prematch news conference ahead of Saturday's FA Cup game against Burnley. "I'm completely focused on doing well and I want completely to give absolutely everything until the end of the season. And then go for the next season, hopefully."

Asked if he could ever envision himself managing another club than Arsenal, Wenger said: "Not really, no. Because I completely commit to this club, and I don't imagine at the moment to manage anywhere else."

The 66-year-old Frenchman does not plan to go quietly into retirement, though, saying he still wants an active role at the club when he is done managing.

There has been speculation that he could become Arsenal's director of football at some point, but Wenger said it might be a lower-profile role than that.

"Will I stop working once I don't manage anymore at a competitive level? No," Wenger said. "I will always try to work if I have the health, and try to be useful at some level. Maybe it will be a different level, but I will always work. It can be managing kids, developing young players. It can be all kinds."

Wenger did rule out one role he will not be taking on in the future.

"I will not run for FIFA [president]," he joked.
