Arsene Wenger made 'big mistake' in Olympiakos loss, says Ian Wright

Ian Wright labelled Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger's decision to select David Ospina "a big mistake'' after the Gunners slumped to a 3-2 defeat against Olympiakos in the Champions League.

The painful home loss has left Arsenal with no points from their opening two group games, with back-to-back matches against mighty Bayern Munich to come and early elimination a real danger.

Ospina dropped the ball over his line to gift Olympiakos their second goal, with the Colombian's selection ahead of regular first-choice Petr Cech therefore coming in for close scrutiny.

Former Arsenal striker Wright said on BT Sport: "I was worried about Ospina at the start because I believe the back two guys [Laurent Koscielny and Gabriel] aren't confident enough as it is.

"There's not enough aerial supremacy in there and the goalkeeper seemed to me like he was trying to second-guess something.

"For somebody who's not playing often -- and this is a must-win game -- how can you put Ospina in goal? You've got to question the manager there.

"I think that's a big mistake. Why not start with Petr Cech simply because of the experience he's got? Because we have to win this game, Arsenal have to win this game.

"Normally we're out by the quarterfinal, last 16, this time we've got a massive hill to climb [to survive the group stage].''

However, Wenger defended his decision to start Ospina, pointing to the goalkeeper's recent record a form.

"Ospina played 19 games last year, kept 14 clean sheets," Wenger said in his postgame news conference. "Last week at Tottenham he had a fantastic game. No keeper is mistake-free. It could have happened to Petr Cech as well."

Wenger explained why he left sole summer signing Cech out, saying: "He had a slight alert before the game at Leicester, [on Saturday]. It's not because of that that we lost the game. I make those decisions and the selections for the team and I am responsible for it.

"You cannot select the team by making a poll before the game and taking everybody's opinion."
