Arsenal star Mesut Ozil says football must remain grounded as fees soar

Mesut Ozil has said football has to be careful not to lose its grip on reality, telling Express that "no individual around the world is worth €50 million."

Ozil, 26, became the most expensive German player ever when he joined Arsenal from Real Madrid for €50m in 2013.

And this summer, Belgium international Kevin De Bruyne left Wolfsburg to sign for Manchester City in a deal reported to be worth close to €80m.

Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who has said he believes a Premier League club will invest more than €100m in one player by next summer, warned about the explosion of transfer fees earlier this month.

But Ozil urged football to remain grounded, saying: "No individual around the world is worth €50m.

"That's why in football we have to be careful to not lose our grip on reality and it is also important that, through the opportunities football offers, we do good and help."

The Germany international midfielder said he believed Arsenal could win the Premier League title this season, saying: "We were the best team in the second half of the season [last season] -- we went on a roll and recorded 13 wins.

"The team has not changed that much, so why shouldn't we be able to achieve that just a bit earlier this season?"

Asked whether a move to the Premier League was right for his Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger, who joined Manchester United this summer, Ozil replied: "That's for Basti to decide. The Premier League is worthy experience for every player. It is a very strong league.

"You can't even rest against strugglers. And while Manchester United have a strong squad, Basti is a fighter with a lot of experience."
