Alexis Sanchez's slow start to Premier League does not concern Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says he is not concerned by Alexis Sanchez's slow start to the Premier League season.

Sanchez, 26, was a part of the Chile squad that won the Copa America this summer and was given extra time away from Arsenal's preseason training to recover.

The winger's fitness was so good when he returned that he was put straight into the squad for the opening day defeat to West Ham and came on as a late substitute. However, he has yet to score in any of his club's eight games and looks a shadow of the player who arrived on the scene last season with 16 goals in 34 league games.

Wenger was asked at his prematch news conference whether Sanchez had made a slow start this season, but said he was not worried about his £35 million star.

"I think I played him very early before he was completely fit, physically, that is one explanation,'' said Wenger. "The second is that every player who has won a big trophy with the national team takes some while to settle and come back to his best. These are the two main explanations for me.

"Physically he is not completely ready, coming out of a big achievement and that takes time.

"I don't worry for Alexis Sanchez. Even when he doesn't score he is still a major threat for everybody and I am confident he will score very soon.''

After losing to Chelsea last weekend, Arsenal beat rivals Tottenham in the Capital One Cup in midweek and Wenger gave some of his squad a breather with Mathieu Flamini bagging two goals in the 2-1 win.

"It shows we have a strong squad," Wenger added. "I have great confidence in these players. Flamini has shown what a character he is. He has used his frustration in a positive way.

"[Mathieu] Debuchy is coming back to best. He is mentally very strong and committed to competing with Hector Bellerin."

Wenger also updated on injury news, with Francis Coquelin struggling to be fit for the weekend's game with Leicester.

"Coquelin is improving well but he is not available for tomorrow," he said. "He might start practice tomorrow. He will have a scan today but it looks quite positive. It's a little bone in the knee."
