Arsene Wenger feels 'pressure to keep up' with spending of Arsensal's rivals

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says he feels pressure to sign players in the final week of the transfer window, as he aims to compete with his big spending Premier League rivals.

The capture of Petr Cech from Chelsea is Wenger's solitary high profile signing of this transfer window, while the two Manchester club, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham have all spent more than the Gunners this summer.

"Of course, there is pressure to keep up with them [his rivals]," Wenger told Sunday newspaper reporters. "All of them have spent more money, but only one can win the title.

"It's not just the consequence of the money they spend in how successful you are, that is why you have to keep your nerve and not buy just because the others buy. You should buy because you have found a player that can really give you a plus.

"There is always time to take a gamble and we are not against taking a gamble, but what you want is to take a gamble in a market where the opportunity is there."

Wenger, speaking ahead of his side's game against Liverpool at Emirates Stadium on Monday, went on to suggest his big summer signing of a year ago is proving himself to be on par with some of the world's top players, as he offered this fulsome praise for Chilean winger Alexis Sanchez.

"He is already better than when he arrived," Wenger added. "In his final finishing there is room for improvement, in his final ball he is already much better, his vision is quite good an incisive.

"He has that desire to go forward and provoke. He is a guy who provokes chaos in the defences because he has a go at you. He has a desire to go forward, to provoke opponents, to run at people, creates danger.

"What Sanchez has is in the first two yards he is lightning quick. He has that explosive attitude linked with his spirit. That makes him even more spectacular."
