Francis Coquelin lucky not to see red, says Arsenal great Thierry Henry

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry believes Gunners midfielder Francis Coquelin was fortunate not be sent off in his side's 2-1 win against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Palace boss Alan Pardew suggested referee Lee Mason "needed to be braver" as he opted against giving Coquelin a second yellow card for a foul on James McArthur at Selhurst Park, and Henry agreed with those sentiments.

"In the second half, since you come out and are still on a yellow, you do not need to commit in the way he did," former New York Red Bulls striker Henry told Sky Sports.

"You have to be smarter, play with your brain. Go, put pressure, stop. He left himself exposed for a red card and he got lucky he was allowed to be substituted."

Henry also suggested the victory for his former club was engineered in unconventional fashion for Arsene Wenger's side, as he hinted they swapped style for substance as they bounced back from a defeat against West Ham on the opening weekend of the season.

"They won not the 'Arsenal way' maybe but they won at Palace, which is not easy," he added. "Arsene said it himself, zero points after two games and it would have been a bit of trouble.

"It [the West Ham defeat] happened early so you can re-group and concentrate on what is coming next. That is the beauty of this league. If you don't go out there and match the performance of the team you are playing against, you are dead."
