Mathieu Flamini fighting to prove worth at Arsenal

Mathieu Flamini has said he hopes to prove he still has a future at Arsenal as he enters the final year of his deal.

Flamini, 31, returned to Arsenal on a free transfer in 2013 but has fallen down the pecking order, with Francis Coquelin established as the club's first-choice holding midfielder.

The Frenchman was recently linked with a move to Bastia on a free transfer but he said he hopes to prove his worth to Arsene Wenger.

"I don't like to give up that easily," Flamini said, according to the Daily Telegraph. "In football everything can move very easily one way and another. I don't like to look back at the past. We are starting a new season and I'm focused on that one.

"I played a lot in the first part of the season and then I got injured in January and after that the team has been winning nearly every game, so it's difficult to complain. Everything will be open and I will work hard to get my place back."

Wenger, meanwhile, has said he is open to the possibility of making further signings this summer but felt there was already enough quality in the squad.

Arsenal have already brought in goalkeeper Petr Cech from Chelsea and Wenger said the focus should be on ensuring the current players are at their best.

"I don't close the door if we find any player who can strengthen the squad," the Gunners boss said. "We have already strengthened the squad, but I believe part of the success of the squad is also the level of cohesion.

"We have a good level of cohesion. I believe we have the quality, and it's now about how much we can be stronger together.

"We felt at the end of last season that we had moved forward, but it is still not enough. In this preseason we have to move forward again. We have to move forward together, which for me it is more important than dreaming about finding a miraculous player who wins you everything.

"It's important we find our combination and cohesion very quickly. We have to use it as a springboard to improve, and our preseason games can help us strengthen that feeling. It is an opportunity to give an opportunity to people on the fringe of the team. It can influence my decisions until the transfer market is over."
