Arsenal's winning run surprising, says Arsene Wenger

Arsene Wenger has admitted Arsenal have taken him aback with their remarkable winning run.

The Gunners have won their last eight league games, which is their best run in the top flight since their Invincibles recorded nine straight victories in 2004.

And they have won 16 times in their last 18 matches in all competitions to surprise even an optimist like Wenger.

He said: "I always hope the best of my team but no manager in the world if he is serious can predict a run like that."

Wenger was delighted his free-scoring team showed their grit and determination to beat Burnley 1-0 at Turf Moor on Saturday.

"Sometimes you cannot always win 3-1 or 4-1 or 5-1," he explained. "You have to be capable as well to win 1-0 and I am glad we can do that as well. We know we can play with sharpness and fluency but we know that today was a bit more scrappy, more fighting, more combative and we can produce that side as well."

Wenger referred back to the team who completed the 2003-04 season unbeaten by pointing out that Arsenal have a track record of sustaining excellent runs.

"I would just remind you that we won a championship without losing a game," he added. "Nobody else has done that."

Giroud in particular has set the squad the target of keeping their winning run going until the end of the season.

"We want to carry on and keep this good run going until the end."

Giroud had scored in his previous six Premier League games but failed to find the net at Turf Moor.

But he took solace in the way Arsenal ground out victory in a match where defensive midfielder Francis Coquelin stood out.

"You can't play your best football every game," he added, echoing his manager. "We tried to be focused on not conceding and it's one more clean sheet. As long as we were winning the game, I don't think we were in too much danger. We are really pleased.

"It was a big fight. All the way we tried to play our football. Even though we didn't score the second goal, we were pleased with the performance. It was a big win for us."

Wenger believes youngsters Coquelin and Hector Bellerin have made a major impact since coming into their team but feels his side, who were only eighth in November, should not be criticised for their slow start because of their injury problems in the first half of the season.

"People forget that we had big players out for four months and at some stages six or seven players from the squad completely out so that made a big difference," he said. "We have a better balance in the team [now]. Some players have made it like Coquelin contributes to the balance of the team.

"Hector Bellerin now has come into the team and big players like [Laurent] Koscielny, like [Olivier] Giroud, like [Mesut] Ozil were out for four months in the season. Four months: the three together. People forget that as well."
