Szczesny toasted his clean sheet in the 1-0 win by gathering together some of his teammates to pose for a snap that has attracted a huge number of hits after being posted to Lukas Podolski's Instagram account.

“I asked Paul Johnson [Gunners equipment manager] to bring my phone on to the pitch after the game and grabbed a selfie with the Arsenal fans, which was brilliant,” Szczesny told the club’s website.

“They were fantastic all afternoon. They sang their hearts out and I am sure they enjoyed themselves. It was fantastic for us too and we wanted to give something back to them.”

Szczesny’s joy came at the end of a dogged Arsenal display that secured his team a valuable three points, as they took advantage of Chelsea’s slip-up last weekend to move back into contention in the Premier League title race.

Arsenal victories have tended to be built around their free-flowing football during Arsene Wenger’s lengthy reign as the club’s manager, but Szczesny suggests it is their solidity at the back that has proved to be crucial to their push for honours this season.

“It has been that way away from home sometimes. We concentrated on defending,” he added. “We were fantastic defensively. We scored early so they were always going to dominate the possession.

The two centre backs were outstanding then Thomas Vermaelen came on and we played with three centrebacks. He did well as well. They did not create any chances and the only one they did have [from Nacer Chadli] I pretty much gifted them.

“Overall it was a huge win for us. We knew that Chelsea had dropped points against Villa and we have to take advantage of that. It was very pleasing to get a win at White Hart Lane after quite a few years.”
