Coquelin loaned out to Freiburg

Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin has joined SC Freiburg on a season-long loan deal.

Francis Coquelin was loaned out to Lorient in 2010.

Coquelin, 22, who joined the Gunners in 2008, struggled to dislodge the likes of Mikel Arteta and Aaron Ramsey from the starting XI last season, making just 22 appearances in all competitions.

And with the North London club having been linked with midfielders such as Marouane Fellaini and Lars Bender of late, the Frenchman has opted to spend another season on loan, having been shipped out to Lorient in 2010.

Coquelin, who signed a new contract with Arsenal in 2012, has already joined up with his new-team mates for training, which began this week.

"We are pleased with the loan of Francis, he is a dynamic midfielder who can drive the team forward in addition to his defensive qualities,” Freiburg’s acting director of sport Jochen Saier said.

The France Under-21 international was part of the Gunners’ FA Youth Cup-winning squad in 2009, and has featured 43 times in total for the senior side.

Coquelin’s temporary exit follows on from defender Johan Djourou’s loan switch to Hamburg earlier this week.
