Argentina and Man United goalkeeper Sergio Romero to miss World Cup with injury

ESPN FC's Brian McBride shares his thoughts on how Argentina will cope at the World Cup without injured, No. 1 goalkeeper Sergio Romero.
2014's FIFA World Cup runners up Argentina have one of the strongest front lines in the world. Can Messi and co take them one step further this time and see them lift the trophy?
After Mauro Icardi's big season for Inter, the FC crew question his omission from Argentina's 23-man squad for the World Cup.
After their runners-up finish in 2014, the ESPN FC crew assess Lionel Messi and Argentina's chances of lifting the World Cup in Russia.

Manchester United's Sergio Romero has been ruled out of this summer's World Cup after the Argentina goalkeeper suffered a knee injury.

Argentina's official Twitter feed announced the news late on Tuesday -- a day after the country's 23-man squad was announced.

A statement on the Argentinian Football Association's website read: "Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero will be removed from the list of 23 players who will participate in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

"The player of Manchester United today suffered a joint blockage in his right knee which requires surgery."

Later on Tuesday, another tweet from the Argentina account said that Tigres' Nahuel Guzman would be Romero's replacement for the team headed for Russia.

Chelsea's Willy Caballero and Franco Armani were the other goalkeepers named in Jorge Sampaoli's squad.

Romero has made 94 career appearances with Argentina, the seventh-most in team history and most by a goalkeeper.
