Lionel Messi frustrated as Argentina lose 2-0 lead over Paraguay

Lionel Messi lamented Argentina's failure to hold on to a 2-0 lead as they were forced to settle for a point against Paraguay in their opening Copa America match.

Argentina were in control before the break thanks to goals from Manchester City's Sergio Aguero and a Messi penalty, but were frustrated as a strike from Nelson Haedo Valdez and a last-ditch Lucas Barrios equaliser made it 2-2.

Barcelona star Messi said it was "maddening" that his team -- who lost last summer's World Cup final to Germany -- had failed to take maximum points.

"We were at fault in that we should have had more of the ball in the second half and controlled the match, not them," he told a news conference, according to Reuters.

"We should have slowed the match down when they were coming at us.

"Now we have to think about Uruguay [their next match], and we know we must win. There's a lot to improve and this is only the first match. Now we've got to be calmer than ever."

Holders Uruguay, who eliminated Argentina on penalties in the 2011 Copa America, beat guest team Jamaica 1-0 in their opening match.
