Liga MX's Club America signs Chilean striker Nicolas Castillo

Club America has signed Chile international Nicolas Castillo, the team announced on Thursday.

The former Pumas UNAM striker provides the defending Liga MX champions an immediate boost in attack. The club has suffered departures and injuries during the first several weeks of the Clausura 2019.

"I'm very happy, very motivated for the challenge in my career and to do it with Club America," Castillo said.

The Chilean returns to the Mexican league after he signed a five-year deal with Portuguese power Benfica last summer. He failed to score in 11 appearances across all competitions for the Lisbon club.

Castillo will earn a yearly salary of more than $2 million, making him the second highest paid player in the league, according to ESPN Deportes' David Faitelson.

During his three-season stint with Pumas, he scored 25 goals in 39 goals.

America also officially announced the signing off Nicolas Benedetti from Colombian squad Deportivo Cali.

Cecilio Dominguez (Independiente), Diego Lainez (Real Betis), and Joe Corona (Tijuana) were among notable exits at America, which has also seen injuries to Oribe Peralta, Mateus Uribe, Jeremy Menez and Andres Ibarguen.
