Club America and manager Gustavo Matosas part ways

Gustavo Matosas lasted just five months and a day at Club America, with the club parting ways with the coach on Tuesday, following the team's exit in the Clausura 2015 quarterfinal against Pachuca on Saturday.

"We've ended the working relationship with Gustavo Matosas and his coaching staff by mutual agreement and in a cordial manner," sporting president Ricardo Pelaez said at a news conference in Mexico City.

Matosas took over last December, right after Las Aguilas had been crowned Apertura 2014 champions, and the club invested heavily in players like Colombian Darwin Quintero and Argentine Dario Benedetto, although Matosas wanted further change this offseason, which the club wouldn't grant.

"Last season we made a strong outlay and, at this time at America, having continuity in the playing staff is important," Pelaez said.

An attack-minded Uruguayan coach, Matosas -- who won consecutive Liga MX titles with Leon -- guided America to the the CONCACAF Champions League title last month and helped the club to a second-place finish in the Clausura regular season, but he wasn't entirely satisfied with how things were going.

"I wasn't enjoying it not because of anything in the institution, but because I didn't see what I wanted to on the pitch," said Matosas at the same news conference. "To implement my playing style, I need certain types of players and with [the club] not being able to bring them, it's best to step aside."

Matosas wasn't the only manager to leave Liga MX clubs this week, with Cruz Azul announcing Luis Fernando Tena had left, Atlas and Tomas Boy parting ways and Jose "Profe" Cruz leaving Puebla.

Since the end of the regular season, Daniel Guzman has also left Club Tijuana and Roberto Hernandez's time as interim coach at Morelia came to an end, meaning there are currently six Liga MX clubs without a coach.
