Albania squad to receive diplomatic passports after Romania victory

Albania players will be given diplomatic passports in recognition of their win over Romania at Euro 2016.

Albania scored their first goal and won their first match in European Championship history on Sunday, beating Romania 1-0 in the Group A clash in Lyon on Sunday.

Armando Sadiku scored the historic goal in the 43rd minute that could take his nation through to the tournament's round-of-16 stage as one of the best third-placed teams.

"They are ambassadors without passports, but the premier will supply [diplomatic] passports to them," Albanian Football Federation (FSHF) president Armand Duka said on Monday.

Diplomatic passports are usually issued to diplomats of a country for official international travel and residence, while accredited diplomats holding such a passport may be granted diplomatic immunity by a host country.

Albania will likely have to wait until Wednesday to see if their three points are enough for them to advance to the round of 16.

In Tirana and in neighbouring Kosovo, where half of the squad has its origins, fans erupted in joy with people in the streets waving red-and-black national flags. Firecrackers were lit, cars rang their horns for hours and people danced to folk music.

The FSHF said that UEFA's financial reward will be divided among the Albania players, who have also been promised more rewards from the nation's government.
