Big wins for Al Ahly, Etoile du Sahel in Caf Champions League

Egyptian side Al Ahly and Etoile du Sahel from Tunisia were the big winners on a night of Caf Champions League group phase action on Tuesday that otherwise produced three draws.

Ahly moved to the top of Group D after a 2-0 success over Coton Sport at the Roumdé Adjia Stadium in Garoua.

Both goals came inside the opening 14 minutes as Ahly made a dream start, with Nigerian U23 international Junior Ajayi breaking the deadlock.

Shortly afterwards the visitors had a second as attacking midfielder Moamen Zakaria also found the back of the net. It was a fine outing for the Egypt international, who also set up the first goal.

The result leaves Coton Sport rooted to the bottom of the pool with no points from their opening two games, while Ahly made up for a mediocre start to their group phase play when they were held 0-0 at home by Zambian side Zanaco in the opening round.

Zanaco host Wydad Casablanca in Lusaka on Wednesday.

A late goal three minutes into injury-time from French-born Algerian international forward Hameur Bouazza gave Etoile victory over Sudanese side Al-Merreikh SC in Omdurman.

Etoile had taken a first half lead through Brazilian forward Diogo Acosta, but Bakri Al-Madina equalised for the home side shortly after halftime.

The win sees Etoile take command of Group A with a full haul of six points, ahead of second-placed Al Hilal from Sudan, who were held 0-0 by Mozambican side Ferroviário Beira.

Al Hilal have two points from two games, with Al Merreikh and Ferroviário Beira on one each.

In Group B, another Egyptian side, last year's beaten finalists Zamalek, had a frustrating night as they were held 0-0 by Al Ahli Tripoli in a game played in Sfax, Tunisia.

Zamalek top the pool with four points after an opening day victory over CAPS United, who host Algerian side USM Alger on Wednesday.

In Group C action, Ethiopian side Saint George S.C. played to their second 0-0 draw of the pool phase when they held Tunisian side Esperance in Addis Ababa. The visitors finished the game with 10 men after a red card for midfielder Ghilane Chalali on 54 minutes.

Saint George had also claimed an excellent point at defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns in the opening round.

Downs travel to Kinshasa to play AS Vita Club on Wednesday, with the latter having lost their opener to Esperance in the last round.
