Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure is in contention to win a record fifth successive African Footballer of the Year award after being named among the nominees for the 2015 prize.

Toure is one of two players to have been named as the continent's best four times, with the other being former Barcelona, Inter and Chelsea striker Samuel Eto'o.

Cameroon striker Eto'o was honoured in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2010, but Toure is the only player to have won the award four years in a row.

He strengthened his case to win it again by captaining Ivory Coast to victory in February's African Nations Cup (ANC).

The 32-year-old's Ivory Coast team-mates Gervinho, Max Gradel and Serge Aurier are also on the 37-man list.

Eleven Premier League footballers are nominated, with Swansea's Andre Ayew, the joint top scorer in the ANC, and Bournemouth's Christian Atsu, who was named Player of the Tournament, other contenders.

Borussia Dortmund's in-form striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is also likely to figure prominently in the voting along with Crystal Palace winger Yannick Bolasie, who helped DR Congo finish third in the ANC.
