Defending champions Singapore knocked out of Suzuki Cup

Defending champions Singapore have been knocked out of the AFF Suzuki Cup after Malaysia's stunning 3-1 victory at the Singapore Sports Hub on Saturday night.

The visitors scored two goals in injury time to get all three points. After an injury-time penalty by midfielder Safiq Rahim, Indraputra Mahayuddin also scored as Singapore pushed forward for the equaliser.

The Malaysians grabbed second spot in Group B behind Thailand and above Singapore and Myanmar. They join Vietnam, the Philippines and the Thais -- who defeated Myanmar 2-0 in their final group game in a simultaneous kickoff at Singapore's Jalan Besar Stadium -- in the last four.

The go-ahead goal came when Safiq scored his 10th international goal as he converted past Hassan Sunny after Amri Yahyah was brought down in the area as Singapore seemed headed for a draw that would have taken them through.

Earlier Safee Sali's 61st minute goal had put the Malaysians ahead before Singapore striker Khairul Amri picked up an 83rd minute equaliser.

The result means that Malaysia will face Vietnam and Thailand will play Philippines in two-legged semifinals, beginning on Dec. 6 and 7.

Singapore went into the game at their new National Stadium knowing that a draw was minimum requirement to advance to the knockout stages, while Malaysia needed all three points to have any chance of progressing.

The Malaysians edged an uneventful first half, hitting the woodwork and winning many of the midfield battles against a Singapore side weakened by injuries and suspension.

The home side came out after the break with renewed vigor. After a mazy run in the 49th minutes, Faris Ramli made space for himself at the edge of the box and unleashed a shot that was just wide.

The breakthrough came just after the hour when Amri Yahyah's cross eluded two Singapore defenders and fell invitingly to Safee Sali, who'd made a run into the box. The JDT forward's powerful shot beat Singapore goalkeeper Hassan Sunny to stun the home crowd and put the visitors ahead.

In the other game, Thailand eased past Myanmar, who are managed by successful former Singapore coach Radojko Avramovic.

Thailand took the lead after 12 minutes after a dazzling, long-range strike from midfielder Tanaboon Kesarat. Kiatisuk Senamuang's team doubled their lead in the 83rd minute through striker Prakit Deeprom.

Three time winners Thailand are looking to win the AFF Championship for the first time since 2002.
