Asian Cup Wrap: Japan cruise past Palestine, Iraq pip Jordan

Defending champions Japan won their first match of this year's Asian Cup, beating newcomer Palestine 4-0 Monday in a Group D match in Newcastle.

Yasuhito Endo, Shinji Okazaki and Keisuke Honda scored in the first half to give Japan a big lead against the tournament debutants in wet and windy conditions at Hunter Stadium. Maya Yoshida scored after the break from Shinji Kagawa's cross to complete the rout.

Ahmed Mahajna was sent off in the 73rd minute to make it a tough first tournament start for the Palestinians, who qualified by winning the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup in the Maldives.

In Group D's other match, Yaser Kasim's late goal gave 2007 champion Iraq a 1-0 win over Jordan.

Kasim wrong-footed three defenders as he surged into the area and his shot deflected off Tareq Khattab and past Jordan captain Amer Shafi as he dived to left in the 77th minute.

Jordan finished with 10 men after Anas Bani Yaseen's rough challenge on Saad Abdulameer in the 84th resulted in a second yellow card.
