Josep Gambau released from Adelaide United coaching contract

ADELAIDE, Australia -- Josep Gombau has been released from his Adelaide United coaching contract a year early on compassionate grounds and replaced by former Barcelona and Spain midfielder Guillermo Amor.

The A-League side said Friday that Gombau wanted to be closer to his family, although Australian media reported that he was set to join New York City in Major League Soccer.

Amor represented Barcelona more than 300 times and was a key member of Barca's "Dream Team" under manager Johan Cruyff from the late 1980s through the 1990s. He also played 37 matches for Spain from 1990 to 1998, including at the 1998 World Cup.

He has served as Adelaide United's technical director since August.
