Gombau happy with Reds but wants a win

Adelaide United coach Josep Gombau says only one thing could make him happier with his A-League outfit - a win.

The Spaniard's reign as Reds coach has started with widespread approval for his attractive, attacking style.

And he's certain substance, in the form of victories, will soon come.

"I am so happy with the team," Gombau told reporters on Friday.

"I think the wins will arrive."

Adelaide, who host the winless Newcastle Jets on Saturday, won their season opener but since have drawn against Melbourne Victory and lost tight away games against Central Coast and titleholders Western Sydney.

"I am so satisfied ... we are controlling the games, the team is doing well," Gombau said.

"And every day, I am more satisfied with the team ... we are working well, we are improving day by day."

But he conceded getting another win was vital to reward the efforts of his players.

"Tomorrow is very important to win because this will bring confidence to the players," he said.

Gombau expects to field the same starting line-up that lost in controversial circumstances against Western Sydney last Friday night.

The Wanderers triumphed 2-1 but referees boss Ben Wilson admitted two wrong calls went against Adelaide.

Wilson said the ref missed a Western Sydney handball in the chain of play which led to a Wanderers score, and that Western Sydney defender Jerome Polenz should have been sent off for a crude second-half tackle.

Gombau welcomed Wilson's admission of refereeing mistakes but said they were irrelevant to him.

"For me, I don't speak about the referees ... some days the referees can make one action that help you to win the game, some days they can make a mistake and you lose the game," he said.

"It's difficult to be a referee and we need to help them."

The coach also sent a blunt message to his aggrieved players: "Don't find an excuse in the referee. Find the mistake in what we do ... this is what we need to be concentrating on".

And Gombau also urged his charges not to concentrate on the Jets' marquee signing Emile Heskey, likely to come from the bench in his first match of the season after overcoming a knee injury.

"It doesn't matter, for me what is important is the team, not the players," he said.
