Ex-AC Milan defender Kakha Kaladze elected mayor of Georgia capital Tbilisi

Kakha Kaladze
Kakha Kaladze was the clear winner in the Tbilisi mayoral election.

Former AC Milan defender Kakha Kaladze has been elected as the new mayor of the Georgian capital Tbilisi, following in the footsteps of several other former Rossoneri who have moved into politics.

The 39-year-old, who spent nine years in Serie A, scoring 12 goals in 194 games, won just over 50 percent of the vote to become the new mayor of Tbilisi five years after returning to his home country and pursuing a career in politics.

His nearest rival in the election, Aleko Elisashvili, took just under 17.5 percent of the vote, making Kaladze the clear winner.

Kaladze had previously held a position in the Georgian government, following a trend at the Serie A club, whose former owner Silvio Berlusconi was Italy prime minister three times.

Gianni Rivera -- the 1969 Ballon d'Or winner -- also went into politics after a 19-year career with the Rossoneri and is currently a Member of the European Parliament, while George Weah -- the 1995 Ballon d'Or winner -- recently won the first round of presidential elections in Liberia, entering into a presidential run-off.

Andriy Shevchenko also moved into politics after retiring, but he has since returned to the game as coach of Ukraine.
