AC Milan sale delayed as Silvio Berlusconi recovers from heart surgery

AC Milan president Silvio Berlusconi has undergone successful heart surgery in Milan, with the sale of the club likely to be delayed as he completes his recovery.

Former Italian Prime Minister Berlusconi was rushed to hospital after the failure of an aortic valve put him in serious danger.

The 79-year-old's brother Paolo told ANSA the operation had "gone well, without any complications and within the predicted time."

He added: "Now he is in intensive care, and we are waiting for him to wake up. I've seen him and he's breathing normally.

"The surgeons have done their job in the most professional way possible."

The proposed sale of Milan to a group of Chinese investors will be delayed as a result of Berlusconi's surgery.

The investors had secured a period of exclusivity for negotiations which has now been extended until the end of the month to enable Berlusconi to give final consent to the sale of his majority shareholding.

Speaking to Milan Channel, his brother said: "Let's give him time to recover, then think about the future of Milan.

"If he decides to sell Milan, it will only be on the condition that the person can return the team to its former glory.

"Fans should rest assured that a sale will only be to those who can make us great again."

Berlusconi has owned the club for the past three decades and recently said that if he did not agree to its sale he would rebuild with young Italian talent and without major investment.

Milan have failed to qualify for Europe for three consecutive seasons -- their most unsuccessful period under Berlusconi's ownership.
