AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli to undergo operation on groin problem

AC Milan have announced that striker Mario Balotelli is to undergo surgery on a groin injury.

Balotelli, currently on loan at Milan from Liverpool, has not played for the Serie A club since late-September, when the problem first flared up.

Reports had suggested that the Italy international was due to fly to Munich on Tuesday for a final consultation which was set to be followed by an operation, keeping him sidelined until January.

And the club has confirmed that Balotelli will have to go under the knife.

"AC Milan communicates that tomorrow [Wednesday] Mario Balotelli will have surgery to correct a persistent groin injury in Munich, Germany," a Milan statement read. "The injury has been ongoing for weeks and conservative treatment has not had the desired effect.

"The operation will be conducted by professor Ulrike Muschaweck."

Renowned German surgeon Muschaweck has previously operated on Bayern Munich duo Xabi Alonso and Javi Martinez while they were still playing for Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao respectively.

Balotelli has made just four appearances for the Rossoneri this season and has scored one goal.
