Jeremy Menez's season is effectively over after the AC Milan forward was handed a four-match ban.
The 27-year-old former Paris Saint-Germain player was sent off during the second half of Milan's 3-1 Serie A defeat to Genoa at San Siro on Wednesday and the "insulting gestures" he made in the aftermath have worked against him.
A statement from Serie A also condemned Menez for directing a "blasphemous expression" at the fourth official following his dismissal.
Menez had taken exception to receiving a second yellow card for appearing to foul Edenilson and claimed it was teammate Philippe Mexes who committed the offence.
Milan, who are in 10th place after a disappointing season, have only five games remaining to climb towards the European places and they will largely be without the services of a player who has scored 16 goals this term.
