AC Milan's Pippo Inzaghi defends his performance as manager after win

Pippo Inzaghi defended his performance as AC Milan manager after his side defeated Cagliari 3-1 on Saturday in a victory overshadowed by fans' protests at the San Siro.

After calls to boycott the game, a portion of the stands stayed empty except for banners expressing outrage at the club's management.

While the fans focused their frustration towards club owner Silvio Berlusconi, Inzaghi earned a win he desperately needed moved up to seventh in the Serie A standings.

"I know that I have to prove myself, as Milan looked to a young coach in a difficult moment," Inzaghi told Sky Sport Italia. "I see clubs with a strong squad and very experienced tacticians who are still struggling.

"I knew full well that it wouldn't be easy, but I want to see a Milan side that is higher up the standings. We did well until January, then for a series of reasons we lost our way, but we're back to creating seven or eight clear-cut chances per game. That's the Milan I like.

"We are not in the position we want to be, but I feel the team and club are close to me, we communicate regularly and that is enough for me. I have a contract.

"It's only natural for our fans to be disappointed, so we have to win them back with good performances and results. We've seen the Milan of a few months ago and that's what we can build on."

Two goals from Jeremy Menez, the second coming from the penalty spot, and a Philippe Mexes strike earned the Rossoneri only their second win since the start of February, and first in their last four.

"I am happy for the team, as in recent games we earned a lot less than we deserved. I was convinced that repeating the performance against Fiorentina we could get back to winning ways," Inzaghi said.

"The side seemed a little lost in the opening 10 minutes, but in the end we could've scored quite a few more goals, so there are regrets.

"I feel we started a new season in Florence, are getting some players back to fitness and moving forward.

After a number of tactical experiments, Inzaghi returned to a 4-3-3 formation in the victory.

"I knew this was the best system and it's also my favourite," the manager said. "I tried to change because I lost so many important players and wanted to use Menez up front. Now he is adapting to play wide and it's working well.

"It is important that players always know where their teammates are on the pitch. I saw the team training well and hoped they would enjoy this evening."

Milan CEO Adriano Galliani said before kick-off that Inzaghi's future at the club would depend on the results he gained from here until the end of the season.

"I am very pleased with these words, as I feel this faith in me every day," Inzaghi said. "Obviously we hoped to do better, but the club takes into account the numerous injuries we suffered this season. We still should've done better with our squad.

"We have to play like this, get results and then the club will decide. If they don't kick me out, then I'll stay at Milan for life!"
