Aberdeen fans attacked in Bosnia ahead of Europa League qualifier

Aberdeen fans
Aberdeen face Siroki Brijeg in the second leg of their Europa League second round qualifier.

A group of Aberdeen supporters have been attacked in Bosnia and Herzegovina before a Europa League qualifying match against Siroki Brijeg.

Fans who had gathered at the Black Dog pub in Mostar were targeted on Wednesday night by a group reportedly carrying bats and flares.

At least two supporters were taken to hospital following the incident, according to reports.

Aberdeen Evening Express journalist Sean Wallace was among those caught up in the violence.

He wrote on Twitter: "Sore head after being bottled by masked Bosnian hooligans in Mostar. Also cuts to legs after being hit by flare in Mostar. Sore but OK.''

The Black Dog Pub urged anyone with information on the attackers to contact police.

A post on the pub's Facebook page read: "All of us at the Black Dog Pub offer our sincerest apologies to the people who were attacked this evening in front of the pub. This was a football rivalry-related incident and is not normal in the old city of Mostar.

"The police are involved and people have been identified. If anyone has any more info please pass it forward.

"Because of this incident, we are asking the good people of Mostar to please come around the old city this weekend and show your support that Mostar is a safe place for tourists and everyone. We will be continuing our live music outside as usual so please come and enjoy.''

Aberdeen play Siroki Brijeg about 12 miles from Mostar on Thursday evening in the second leg of their Europa League second round qualifier. The first leg in Aberdeen ended in a 1-1 draw.
